Staying Warm & Safe: The Art of Layering
Outdoor play is wonderful in all weather when kids are dressed appropriately! As cooler weather approaches, we recommend using a three-layer system so your child can easily adjust their temperature throughout the day:
-
Base Layer (Moisture-Wicking): Long underwear or thermal tops/bottoms (synthetic or wool—avoid cotton, which holds moisture and stays cold).
-
Middle Layer (Insulating): Fleece jackets, sweaters, or insulated pants to trap body heat.
-
Outer Layer (Weatherproof): A windproof and waterproof rain jacket, rain bib, or coat to keep wind, mud, and water out.
Visual Guide: Check out our Dressing for Cold Weather chart below to quickly see how to layer your child based on the daily temperature—whether it’s chilly, cold, or freezing!
Master Gear List (Fall, Winter & Spring)
Please ensure all gear and personal items are clearly labeled with your child’s name. Every participant should wear or bring the following items daily:
-
Weather-Appropriate Footwear: Sturdy closed-toe shoes or waterproof boots (no sandals or slip-ons).
-
Seasonal Outerwear: Rain jacket paired with rain bibs or rain pants (please, no umbrellas, as they limit movement during active play).
-
Complete Change of Clothes: Including top, bottoms, socks, and underwear, packed inside a labeled wet/dry bag or large ziplock bag.
-
Full-Size Backpack: Large enough to comfortably hold their lunch, snack, extra layers, and wet/dry bag.
-
Full-Size Water Bottle: Non-spill and leak-proof.
-
Healthy Lunch & Separate Snack: A nourishing lunch plus a separate protein-rich, low-sugar snack to fuel active outdoor play.
-
Seasonal Warmth Essentials (Cooler Months): Warm hat/beanie, insulated waterproof gloves or mittens, and thermal socks.
-
Optional Daily Items: Sun hat, insect repellent, and sunscreen.
Why the Right Gear Matters
When children are warm, dry, and comfortable, their focus naturally shifts from the elements to discovery, problem-solving, and play. Investing in durable, layered clothing ensures your child can fully immerse themselves in every farm adventure, rain or shine!
